Bangladesh Crisis: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs on Friday (August 9) criticized the opposition parties and said in the Lok Sabha that their (opposition’s) silence on the situation of Hindus and other minority communities in Bangladesh is unfortunate.
During the Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha, BJP MP Anurag Thakur tried to corner the Leader of Opposition and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi by saying that the Leader of the Opposition has not said (anything) about ensuring the safety of minorities in Bangladesh.
‘PM Modi expressed concern and opposition leaders remained silent’
He said, “When the interim government of Bangladesh took charge, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated them, but at the same time he also asked them to ensure the safety of minorities.” Thakur said, “It is unfortunate that the Leader of the Opposition congratulated the interim government (of Bangladesh), but did not mention the safety of Hindus and minorities.” He said, “What was the compulsion (after all)? You talked about Gaza, but not about minorities in Bangladesh.”
BJP MPs demanded the government to intervene
Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus on Thursday took oath as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government, replacing Sheikh Hasina. BJP MP from Dhenkanal in Odisha, Rudra Narayan Pani also raised the issue of attacks on Hindu temples in Bangladesh and said that the Indian government should intervene to ensure their safety.
Pani said, “Hindu temples have been attacked in Bangladesh and the pictures that have come out show that the idol of Lord Jagannath has been attacked. This is unfortunate, reprehensible and painful.” He asked, “What is this mentality behind damaging Hindu temples?” He said that this has hurt not only the people of Odisha but the people of entire India. He said, “The Indian government should talk to Bangladesh so that the culprits can be punished.”
Dilip Saikia, BJP MP from Darang-Udalguri in Assam, also expressed concern over the situation in Bangladesh and urged the government to strengthen security on the India-Bangladesh border. He said, “India wants peace to be restored in Bangladesh. India has a 4,096 km long border with Bangladesh.” He said that security on the India-Bangladesh border should be as strong as the India-Pakistan border. He also said that the Indian government should ensure the safety of minorities in Bangladesh.
Bishnu Pad Ray, BJP MP from Andaman and Nicobar Islands, said, “Congress, Marxist Communist Party and Trinamool Congress should condemn the incident in Bangladesh, but they are sitting quietly.”
